Who's IHWO?   About IHNice   The Director   Why Choose IHNice   Nice and the French Riviera

International House Nice

The school is situated on the 1st floor of IPAG, one of Nice's most prestigious business schools, which is ideal for our students who can meet French students easily and make use of all the facilities a university can offer.
Our location is perfect as we are close to Garibaldi square, 10 minutes from the old town, and 15 minutes from the beach.

The classrooms are spacious and air-conditioned, whilst students also have access to all of the resources of a modern school. There is a cafeteria on the top floor with a terrace with a view, and a school garden with olive and pine trees.

Our students come mainly from Europe, Japan, and North and South America. Most students choose family accommodation which gives them the possibility of speaking French after classes with the family as well as having breakfast and dinner.

The school has computers with internet access at the students’ disposal and WIFI is also freely available so that they can connect to the internet using their own laptop.

School Facilities

  • 5 permanent air-conditioned Classrooms (8 extra classrooms in the same building when necessary)

Teaching

Quality Teaching

Our teachers are all native French speakers and have at least a university degree. They are monitored and undergo continuous training courses which allow them to take on the technology and recommendations of the European Council for the teaching of foreign languages.

Each year 1500 students, young and old, pass through our door and are embraced with warmth by our team. It is not a surprise that so many people have great confidence in us and return to study here year after year. Be assured that we put everything into place to offer you quality teaching.

The head of teaching directs the team, of which the numbers vary between 5 in the winter and 15 in the summer.

A dynamic method

We emphasise the “communicative approach” to French. Whether it is points of grammar, vocabulary or idioms that are involved, the student is always invited to participate. This approach is complemented by a more “task orientated” way of teaching that follows the recommendations of the Council of Europe. This new approach allows the students “to learn in action”, as though they were working in a company, which contributes to a greater authenticity in the teaching method.

The students learn French with other innovative and modern teaching materials: CD Rom ; DVD ; new books etc... Also, the staff use a variety of newspapers, songs and audio-visual material to create a motivating atmosphere on their courses.

Thanks to our testing methods, the classes are made up of small groups of 10 students maximum, allowing each student to fulfil their potential whilst benefitting from group dynamics.

Evaluation

On the first morning the students sit an oral and written test to ensure accurate placement into a class of a similar level. Great care is taken in this process so that the groups form uniform levels of linguistic ability. As a result, the students will neither be worn out nor slowed down by others more or less advanced than them. We use the Common European Framework with its 6 levels of competency from A0 to C2, beginners to advanced.

At the end of the course the students are tested again and are given a certificate of achievement –‘attestation de stage’ –
indicating the precise level achieved in French.

Philosophy

A non discriminative approach to French teaching

International House was founded in 1953 by John and Brita Haycraft. John wanted to change the way foreign languages were taught. Looking at the schools around the world today, it is clear that he succeeded. Many schools continue to follow his principles, especially with teacher training. John had another idea too: to encourage unity and friendship between people by improving the teaching of foreign languages for everyone.

Driven by the motivation and inspiration of the director, William Rubinstein, the school International House in Nice follows in the footsteps layed out by John and Brita Haycraft some 50 years ago.

During your stay with us you can be sure to find :
  • a warm welcome which is beneficial to learning
  • a serious but relaxed environment inside and outside of class
  • a mix of young (17 years old) and old (70 years old) students, where the different generations do not pose a problem
  • the respect that we have for you and the honour and pleasure we receive from you coming to study our language here in France

We love your native language, your culture, your country and your social ideas. We respect your religion, your way of life and the colour of your skin.

We teach a non discriminative philosophy that respects all human beings living on our planet. We thank you for learning our language, a universal language. We further improve ourselves by your presence and by the ideas that you have.

By recognising that it is possible to have harmony between the world population and all their opinions, you will continue, during your stay at International House Nice, to build a sound, more humane and more fraternal world.
